Why Shackleton? Because he never sacrificed his crew for glory. When it meant he would not reach the South Pole, he chose that, and to bring all the crew of the Endurance home rather than risk their lives. His last log was written not in tragedy, but safely at home, after many adventures, after some defeat, but in the triumph ultimately of survival for himself and those whose lives were entrusted to his explorations.
